For schools and junior sporting club

Your school or sporting club can be recognised by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) as a Skilled Workplace – Gold. You will be a leader in this area within Australia and one of only a few schools or clubs in Australia to have achieved this recognition.

Research shows that 1 in 4 in the age group 16 to 24 have a mental illness and 1/2 of all people who experience mental illness have their first episode before the age of 18. Encouraging early help-seeking is one way to promote a mentally healthy environment.

This is where Mental Health First Aid can help. Physical first aid is accepted and widespread in our community, however, most do not cover mental health problems. Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based training course which develops skills and confidence to have supportive conversations with people at risk and help guide them to professional help if needed.

MHFA training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness. It is also associated with decreased stigma and an increase in help provided over time.
